  • Second Time Played (last version 10/31/01) - Shakedown Street - (With the Grateful Dead's Shakedown Street playing on the set-break house music, the band, in an unplanned, spontaneous event, joined in on stage, and took over as the setbreak music was faded away and the house lights came down.)

"tHE FIRST SET WAS REALLY AMAZING AND THE SHAKEDOWN STREET INTO BAM REALLY SET THE TONE FOR THE REST OF THE SHOW, THE BAND PUT ON A GREAT ENCORE AND IT WAS AN AWESOME TWO-NIGHT STAND, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS SHOW"

"This show brought into the new breed that cheese came to be now with their new percussionist. The GWHW>IIWII was rockin`. The shakedown shit>BAM was some thick flowin` funk. Orion` was pretty. As far as the encore is concerned nothing is better tha Land`s End > Smile"

"I went to both the chi-town shows and this one definately prevailed, open with San Jose,Sirens, and Shakedown Street, and then Jessica. Fucking amazing!"

"This show was so great, the crowd was absolutely INSANE and SCI played their best songs. Shakedown street at the break set the best vibe for the second set, and Jessica made me go nuts. Great show, download it."

"I didn`t see this show but I did see Holoween...Amazing...but im posting because someone was comparing this show to a Phish show and i have to say that string cheese will never be Phish and to compare the two is obsurd...Cheese does there own thing....and are uncomparable to Phish....especially concerned to live performances as if Phish were playing UIC it would have been sold out 3 times over...so please don`t try and compare the two."

"The show on halloween kicked ass. I made the trip from st.louis and it was most definately worth it. Shakedown stree was the best part of the show for me, just cause thats what a show is all about, the atmosphere. Smile in the encore set also made the night"

"Great show! I also made the trip from KC, as i read others did too. This truely was a great show. I saw the show in KC at the Uptown Theater(also a good show) But this one beat it by far. I loved the people at this show, i saw a banana, something that looked like beatle juice, and a guy with a HUGE afro(obviosly fake) It was definitly something to remember. STRING CHEESE FOREVER! Peace "

"made the trip from kc, with just enough cash to use the public transportation, eat, and have an incident on my halloween weekend...and an incident it was. i can`t say i have ever heard string cheese jam like they did on 10-30-04...wish you were there!"

"The show was amazing. The lights were awesome. The music was the best. This was a kick ass way to spend my halloween weekend, i wouldnt of picked a better way. The opening was a great choice. Words couldnt explain the show i guess u just had to be there, im so happy i was."

"I`ve been seeing SCI since 2000 and this was a bit above average show. UIC is a choice laid back venue. Entry was a joke and there are no beer sales there, but the sound is phantastic. Really like how Cheese has added all the hyper lights and trippy techno video screen. I thought the 1st set was good with "Sirens" being extra extra kind. But it was 2nd set this night before hulaween where the magic lies. After listening a few times to the three minute Shakedown they played, it`s obvious that Nershi can play ala Jerry any time he pleases but so chooses to maintain his own excellent style. The transition into Bam is so exciting. Orion`s Belt blew my mind this night very very trippy and as this girl said that I was with "Is there a style SCI won`t play?" To that I said "nope." And beginning with the Dead and ending with ABB shows that they always keep in mind their roots of jam greats. The encore is absolutely amazing - worth the download just to hear that. Oh yah, one more thing that stood out - Joyful Sound was actually sung instead of spoken. Very cool! As always, Kyle is Brent reinvented with a different voice. Ramble on Rose!!!"

"Had very high hopes for this Hulaween run and didn`t leave dissapointed at all. San Jose is a fantastic way to open a show even though it was a so so version with very little jamming. Sirens is very average but it does have some very dark tones to it, and it led to a fantastic jam that segued amazingly into Rhum which was one of the highlights of the weekend! Best Rhum n this incidentalist has heard anywhere! Also of note was the set ending IIWII which has turned into a major POWERHOUSE and it delivered in a huge way! Set 2 started in one of those very special ways with the house music playing a smokin` live Shakedown Street that got the crowd in a frenzy. Oddly enough, the lights went down and i found myself dissapointed because the Shakedown was so hot that I wanted to hear the rest of it! Lo and behold, John-O cranked up the Dead as the band took the stage and Cheese picked it up and finished it! It was one of those magical moments that I`ll remember forever. The rest of the set was fairly standard with the exception of Orion`s Belt>Jig which was awesome. The Lands End encore was stupendous and LONG! Thank you cheese"

"San Jose is one of the best openers Cheese has in their bag of tricks. Also this is one of the songs in which you can hear a vast improvement due to the new addition of Jason, who by the way is the man. You couldn’t knock the smile off his face if you tried, like Keith he will make a great politician! Jason for President, or maybe Keith’s VP. But I digress. Like some of the other new material not a huge fan of Sirens, I like it but just a little poppy for me, the kids sure love it though. But the segue into Rhum N’ Zhouc was SICK!!! I really liked the middle eastern theme to it, if you can call it that, Zhouc always a pleasure to hear, and the build up in this segue was excellent. Doing my time was great to hear, as I didn’t get much bluegrass from the boys this summer between Kansas City and Milwaukee. And they definitely filled the void this weekend! The Got What He Wanted was absolutely sick, I am a huge fan of this song, Keith was throwing down the bombs on this, really funky jam. I don’t know what kind of effect he was using, but whatever it was it really thickened and drew out each note. Is What Is was a nice set closer, I really liked the cow bell in the intro, nice touch Travis. Jon-O is the best sound guy a Cheesehead could ask for, and if you haven’t thanked this man yet, he is definitely SCI’s sixth man, and you should let him know that you appreciate him! Plus he has great taste in music. Threw in a dead show during set break, and its always fun to get down during the set break, Shakedown had this effect and rather than cutting the song off, the boys just came out and rocked it out. As I am not the biggest Bam fan, this made it a lot more fun!!! My first Heart of Saturday night, nice to hear, only time will tell if this will be SCI’s One More Saturday Night, not as rockn’ but appropriate. Joyful was sick, and I always love to hear this tune, as it truly is a song that motivates me to give 110% in everything I do in life. I hope it does the same for you. Orions is a great tune, and also gave me a chance to cool it down a little bit. The Segue between this song and Valley is just so perfect, it would be nice to see these two tied together from now on like a China>Rider. Valley has to be one of my fav newer songs, and seeing it evolve since the jig, has been a journey. What I know WHAT! This new Kyle song is FUNKY with a nice little latin flavor. Also the jam near the end that gets darker is sick, “and your left in the sun” part. Keith also employs that bass effect used in Got What he Wanted, whatever it is I really like it. I thought the Outside Inside was set closer, but nope, they tricked us! And what treat it was! JESSICA was great to hear and a great surprise. My favorite part of the show had to be the Lands End, my fav SCI song by far. The Glory Chords was soo intense that I had to look around at the end of the show to find my mind. I am pretty confident I lost it in the heat of Glory Chords. Smile was just icing on the cake! Thanks boys for the amazing ride, and don’t question buying this show, it’s a no brainer, GET IT!"

"got wat he wanted was intense, and when they came out to playing shakedown street the arena lost it, wat a great incident "

"THIS SHOW WAS MY 10TH INCIDENT. INCREDIBLE! THE CHEESE IS A CONSTANTLY CHANGEING MUSICAL MACHINE. THIS IS MY FAVORITE INCIDENT, UNTIL THE NEXT. THE NEW PERCUSSIONIST IS AGREAT ADDITION TO THE BAND."

Mike R from Lodi, Ca 11/5/2004 11:44:28 AM

"This was a magical night with CHEESE. All I need to say is listen to the Lands End and you will figure it out! Mike R"

"After the high energy of the night before, the cheese came back with a totally different spin on this show. More spacy and exploratory, Kang really hit some great highs on this show. The band coming out and playing to the Dead recording of Shakedown was just fantastic! Also, the buildup at the end of 2nd set into Jessica was perfect. The second percussionist really puts a new dimension into the band, Jason Hann is a great addition. I have to send an enormous THANK YOU to Michael Kang for hanging out after the show with some fans. I am a huge fan and really appreciate how graciously he let people take pictures, sign autographs, etc. He is truly a class act and you can really respect and admire the way he handles the fame. Although I liked the the 10/29 show better, many people at the entire run preferred night 2 at UIC. The entire Halloween run is a MUST HAVE in any collection. The amazing thing is that neither show was sold out. This band is SO ON THE TOP OF THEIR GAME right now, and there is not the obnoxious abundance of people who just come for the party, YET. Of the few dozen shows I have seen of theirs since 1999 I have never once had a bad show. Every single show has been either good or great. I cannot say the same for any other band."

"WOW! This was my first Cheese show and man are they awesome! This is one group of awesome musicians. They have so much talent. I plan on going to many more of thier shows."

    Diggit 11/4/2004 5:56:59 PM

"This was my first SCI show. I was very impressed. I had heard many live shows but nothing compares to actually being there. The entire show was filled with much energy. After the set break when they intigrated into the set break with Shakedown Street, the whole place exploded. Can`t wait till my next SCI show!!!!"

    cvoll 11/4/2004 3:33:09 PM

"this show was amazing, this was my first SCI show, but compared to the phish show i went to this summer this was amazing. i honestly have never seen or heard such musical talent, or anything like that at all for that matter, EVER. this show is amazing, coming from shakedown street into the second set was the coolest thing i`ve ever seen. it was so amazing i kind of just stood there with my mouth open, amazed at what had just happened. and then they played outside and inside>jessica, which, being my first show, was the highlight. also, the encore, SO LONG i loved every minute of that show. i can`t wait for the next time they come around here"
