Show Notes

live sound by Matthew Kettle

mixed by Vance Powell at Sputnik Sound, Nashville

mastered by Bill Skibbe, Third Man Mastering

Arguably the best-known live show from the Elephant-era (with previous versions both vinyl and digital having been shared over the years) this July 2nd, 2003 outing at the "brawlroom" is unlike any other show that run. As one of the few shows on the tour to not feature "Black Math", the performance skips many of the more-familiar songs in favor of deep cuts like "Aluminum", "Black Jack Davey", "Candy Cane Children" and the live debut of "The Air Near My Fingers." The highlight though is undoubtedly the impromptu jam that would eventually turn into "Little Cream Soda." While still with much of the favorites present, the experimental and confrontational vibe of the show is palpable...both starting and ending with ominous walls of feedback. Equal parts mania, exhaustion and inspiration, it's crazy to think that *this* show tends to be the primary reference for the entire era. So while it can be one of the most challenging for a newcomer to the band, it's one of the most rewarding and unique performances that Jack and Meg ever gave.
