It seems no matter how many times it’s performed, and almost no matter which part of the set its placed, Vrooom has the capacity to unseat those playing it. Be it the bass melody over the fairy fingers or the re-entry into the verses or the final section, and maybe all points in between, clams await unsuspecting players. Tonight’s version of Vrooom gets all four players at some point in its duration. They get back on the horse with a faultless Frame By Frame and gallop through it at a fair old lick. A stunning rendition.
It’s interesting to hear Cage deviate from the normal gameplan, seemingly coming adrift into a less certain space which, after some paddling, Belew eventually guides safely back to harbour.
The improvs begin in a similarly ambiguous way, very much invoking the feel of the ProjeKcts with Gunn and Mastelotto making most of the running. As things settling into a loping, stomping groove, the character of the piece becomes far rockier than might usually be the case in this improv slot, with Belew offering some acerbic and assertive soloing.
What might be the curse of Vrooom returns to haunt a troubled Lark’s IV which stutters and teeters during the early guitar off-set, steadily regaining its composure as it nears the fast running lines. It’s not the fall that kills you, they say, but hitting the ground. Thankfully Crimson avoid that fate with a heroic recovery.
