Show Notes

The second night at the 12th & Porter started out well enough with Belew turning in a truly stunning guitar solo on Oyster Soup - arguably one of his very best - but after that showstopper things don’t go entirely according to plan. There’d been a hint that Robert’s rig wasn’t behaving as well as it might just ahead of the ‘spider-fingers’ solo during Oyster Soup. At 5.10 into FraKcture, beneath a rolling tidal-wave of aberrant echo, the piece comes to a halt with Fripp announcing with a smile, “We’ll be right back! Hold that moment...I’m going to power down and up again.” Eye-witness Bill Colrus relays what happened next to the readers of Elephant Talk at the time. “Robert's rig crashed during the piece...Adrian kidded that Robert stopped because his "butt got tired" and an audience member shouted out "take it from the top", at which time Robert politely declined, and picked it up in the middle...” Bill also makes an observation many more would go to share as the tour got underway: “trey and pat were excellent...They got sort of "covered-up" during the Thrak tour, so it was great to HEAR every note they played...” The instrumental jostle between Belew and Fripp during Heaven & Earth is a good listen it being altogether a more ballsier affair than the previous evening’s outing.
