First time at the famous Variety. Big sold-out homecoming show for our Atlanta-based sound and stage crew. Helluva crowd. Band is hitting its stride with JT, who is with us for the first time in 2 years. Shaun antics on Whitecap. Super funky Skate U outro. Beautiful, patient solo by Jay on Kite as Justin pushes the rhythm section to new places later. Shaun’s antics in full swing with incessant “Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae)” quotes. The horn section tears through Tio Macaco. Nate and JT goad the audience on the percussion solo. Maz takes Thing of Gold way out and Shaun brings it back in. Justin lays down some Rhodes grit under Bob on What About Me? and JT freight-trains the outro. Groovier Shofukan than usual. The last two tunes are all about Shaun. He, Justin, and JT take Sleeper into space.
